What Happened in 2026
Sajek has closed to tourists several times in 2026. This timeline uses news reports, which are linked below.
- July: Heavy rain, flooding and landslide risk closed Sajek for about eight days. Tourists were evacuated, and it reopened with a caution (opens in a new tab).
- 11 October: A blockade began on the Sajek road, and the administration closed the valley over security concerns (opens in a new tab).
- 16 to 21 October: The blockade was suspended for Durga Puja (opens in a new tab), and about 800 tourists arrived on the first day (opens in a new tab).
- 22 October: The valley was closed again. Tourists were told to leave (opens in a new tab), and a convoy came under gunfire (opens in a new tab) on the way out.
- 4 November: Reports described a 14-day blockade with food shortages (opens in a new tab). The Baghaichhari upazila officer said Sajek would stay closed until further notice (opens in a new tab).
Why the Road Closes
Sajek has one main road in, so a single problem can stop all travel.
- Heavy rain: Landslides and water over low sections are the usual monsoon risk, especially from June to September.
- Blockades and security: Local disputes can close the road, and the administration can suspend tourist entry at short notice.
- Convoy rules: Tourist vehicles normally travel with a security escort at set times, so missing a convoy can cost you hours.
How to Confirm Before You Leave
Do this the day before you travel, and again on the morning you leave.
- Check the district notice. Look for the latest notice on the Rangamati district notice board (opens in a new tab).
- Read recent news. Search for "Sajek" in a national newspaper and check the date on every report.
- Call your resort. Ask if they are open and if guests are arriving today.
- Call your driver. Ask if vehicles are running from Khagrachhari and at what time.
- Check the weather. Look at the forecast for Sajek and Khagrachhari, not just Dhaka.
If Sajek Closes After You Have Booked
- Rooms: Ask your resort to move your booking to a later date before you ask for a refund.
- Transport: Ask your driver or operator what they will return if the trip cannot go ahead.
- Tours: Read the cancellation terms before you pay a deposit. Some operators treat deposits as non-refundable.
